The Semana Santa constitutes the most important
social, cultural and religious event in Seville every year.
 Thousands
of people from all over Spain and abroad come to Seville each year
to participate in this unique celebration. Semana Santa in Seville
is by no means a tourist phenomenon. Everyone in Seville, young
and old, children and parents, rich and poor participate actively
in the celebration. Semana Santa is much more than a religious event.
In fact hundreds of fans of Semana Santa are not
Catholics. Semana Santa is one of the oldest traditions in Seville,
and it is an artistic and cultural event of major importance like
opera representations are in Italy or the Carnival in Venice or
Rio. Baroque imaginary and music staged along the streets and squares
of this ancient city, an expression of deep emotional feeling that
embraces us all.
 Semana
Santa has its roots in medieval Seville in the guilds of the city.
Each guild, representing each sector of society had it own procession
(parade of people following a religious image along the streets)
in Semana Santa. Seville was a very rich city after the discovery
of America, all the trade with the new world was conducted from
here, so the guilds contribute money and works of art to the to
the splendour of Semana Santa and so continues the tradition until
nowadays.
People in Seville are proud of their finest art
expression and they love it. Like all celebrations in Latin countries,
Semana Santa is also a great street party that lasts one week, where
people enjoy themselves and share emotions.
