Tour of Granada
Granada was the capital of Islamic Spain under
the Nazary dynasty from 1238 until 1492.
The Alhambra palace that overlooks the city from
the top of the hill of the same name was built between 1333 and
1391 and it represents the culmination of Islamic art and architecture
in Spain and perhaps the world. It is a jewel of architecture,
comprised of wood and plaster carvings enclosed by pools and sensuous
gardens.
Breath-taking are the views of the Alhambra
against the backdrop of the snowy mountains of the Sierra Nevada.
The poet Federico García Lorca was born in Granada and
had a life-long love affair with this city. Nowadays our appreciation
of the beauty and character of Granada is deeply influenced by
the writings of Lorca.
We invite you to visit in Granada:
- The
Alhambra Palace and the Generalife Gardens. A reading
of Washington Irving’s Tales of the Alhambra, who lived
and wrote in Granada in the 19th century, is a good introduction
to the spirit of these palaces and gardens.
- The
Cathedral and The Royal Chapel which contain a fine
collection of Flemish and Italian painters: Botticelli, Peruggio,
Van der Weyden and Hans Memling .
- Walk
Around the Albaicín quarter and stop for a drink
and a tapa in San Nicolas square.
- Take
a walk along the Carrera del Darro and visit the Arab
baths and the tea houses “teterias” under the view
of the Alhambra towers.
- Sacromonte:
the hills across the Alhambra, famous for the cave-dwelling
gypsies and flamenco.
- Casa
Museo de Federico García Lorca in La Huerta
de San Vicente.
-
Sierra Nevada,
the mountain range just 20 kms from Granada, is one of the most
popular ski resorts in Spain. It offers the possibility to practice
all kinds of snow sports from December to the end of April.
Few European ski resorts can boast of having both sunshine and
being just an hour’s drive from the Mediterranean “Costa
Tropical”.
- Alpujarras,
we recommend a visit to this mountainous area, situated on the
southern slopes of Sierra Nevada, about 60 km. from Granada.
Visit the villages of Capileira and Bubion. The views of Sierra
Nevada, local architecture and its exuberant nature will capture
the visitor.
