Learn Spanish living in Seville

Seville, in Spanish Sevilla, is the capital of southern Spain, Andalucia. Few places in Spain offer the attractions of this unique city: ancient monuments and palaces, the cathedral, the river, popular fiestas, Semana Santa and April Fair, bars and bodegas, good weather and above all the lively character of this vibrant and colourful city.

Seville has always had an important role in history: from Roman times to the present day. In the 16th century Seville was perhaps the most important city in Europe, because of its major role in the discovery of and trade with the New World. The variety of architectural styles and impressive monuments are the witness of this past. Seville has the largest historical quarter in Europe.

Giralda Center-SH invites you to tour Seville’s past and present:

Barrio de Santa Cruz, narrow streets lined with orange trees, quiet patios, traditional bodegas and restaurants.

The Alcazar Palace is one of Spain’s most beautiful and historical buildings. Dating from Arabic times, it is a good example of Mudejar architecture: the fusion of Islamic and Christian cultures influenced architecture around the 14th century. Isabel of Castilla and Fernando, Emperor Charles I and Philip II lived in this palace.

For us, the Alcázar of Seville reflects a period of Spain’s history in which three cultures (Muslim, Christian and Jewish) coexisted peacefully and each made their contribution to the beauty and greatness of this palace.

The Cathedral and Giralda of Seville, built on the site of the old mosque of Seville is one of the largest and most impressive Gothic cathedrals in Europe. Christopher Columbus is said to be buried here.

The main tower of the cathedral, La Giralda, is still the minaret of the ancient mosque. From the top of the tower you can get the best view of Seville and the country around the city. We recommend that any visit of Seville starts here, just 100 mts from our school.

La Macarena and Triana, these two popular quarters of Seville are famous because of the flamenco tradition still alive in their streets and bodegas. Here you can experience Sevillians’ passion for flamenco singing, dancing and guitar playing on every informal occasion.

April Fair in Seville, a seven day festival that takes place in Seville at the end of April every year. During the day and night people enjoy flamenco, sevillanas dancing, bull fighting, colourful traditional costumes, eating and drinking. Everyone in Seville, young and old alike, participate in this fiesta.

Semana Santa in Seville (Holy Week): A different way to understand religious feeling. Art, flamenco and street fiesta are the ways in which people in southern Spain express their deepest religious feelings. This is not a tourist attraction. Sevillians live this colourful religious fiesta with intensity and joy every spring.
