Learn Spanish in Seville, Spain

Learn Spanish living in Seville: Seville, in Spanish Sevilla, is the capital of southern Spain, Andalucia. Few places in Spain offer the attractions of this unique city: ancient monuments and palaces, the cathedral, the river, popular fiestas, Semana Santa and April Fair, bars and bodegas, good weather and above all the lively character of this vibrant and colourful city.

Seville has always had an important role in history: from Roman times to the present day. In the 16th century Seville was perhaps the most important city in Europe, because of its major role in the discovery of and trade with the New World. The variety of architectural styles and impressive monuments are the witness of this past. Seville has the largest historical quarter in Europe.

Giralda Center-SH invites you to tour Seville’s past and present:

Barrio de Santa Cruz, narrow streets lined with orange trees, quiet patios, traditional bodegas and restaurants.

The Alcazar Palace is one of Spain’s most beautiful and historical buildings. Dating from Arabic times, it is a good example of Mudejar architecture: the fusion of Islamic and Christian cultures influenced architecture around the 14th century. Isabel of Castilla and Fernando, Emperor Charles I and Philip II lived in this palace.

For us, the Alcázar of Seville reflects a period of Spain’s history in which three cultures (Muslim, Christian and Jewish) coexisted peacefully and each made their contribution to the beauty and greatness of this palace.

The Cathedral and Giralda of Seville, built on the site of the old mosque of Seville is one of the largest and most impressive Gothic cathedrals in Europe. Christopher Columbus is said to be buried here.

The main tower of the cathedral, La Giralda, is still the minaret of the ancient mosque. From the top of the tower you can get the best view of Seville and the country around the city. We recommend that any visit of Seville starts here, just 100 mts from our school.

La Macarena and Triana, these two popular quarters of Seville are famous because of the flamenco tradition still alive in their streets and bodegas. Here you can experience Sevillians’ passion for flamenco singing, dancing and guitar playing on every informal occasion.

April Fair in Seville, a seven day festival that takes place in Seville at the end of April every year. During the day and night people enjoy flamenco, sevillanas dancing, bull fighting, colourful traditional costumes, eating and drinking. Everyone in Seville, young and old alike, participate in this fiesta.

Semana Santa in Seville (Holy Week): A different way to understand religious feeling. Art, flamenco and street fiesta are the ways in which people in southern Spain express their deepest religious feelings. This is not a tourist attraction. Sevillians live this colourful religious fiesta with intensity and joy every spring.

Other historical places of interest we recommend:

  • Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla (Fine Art Museum)
  • Archivo de Indias (where all the original documents from the discovery and trade with America are kept)
  • Mudejar Style Churches to visit in Seville: Santa Catalina, San Juan de La Palma, Omnium Santorum. San Marcos
  • Maria Luisa Park and Plaza de España will impress the visitor with the Sevillian interpretation of Modernist Art and architecture. The magnificent buildings spread across this park date from the 1929 Latin American exhibition. Worth visiting are the Museo Arqueológico de Sevilla and the Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares.
  • Isla y monasterio de la Cartuja. Comprised of a beautiful ancient monastery visited by Christopher Columbus, recently transformed into a modern art museum and the pavillions of the 1992 World Exposition.
  • Roman city of Italica in the country just 5 kms outside of Seville. Visit the impressive remains of this city founded by the Emperor Trajano, born in Seville. It contains one of the best preserved amphitheaters in Spain.
