RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TAPAS BARS IN SEVILLE

TRIFÓN: Its real name is "LA FLOR DEL TORANZO", but we all know this house by the name of its founder. It is at the junction of Gamazo and Barcelona streets, near Plaza Nueva. Rogelio offers an assortment of specialties of all kinds: good soups and good tapas. Recommendation: the montadito de picante con lomo (toasted sandwich with spiced pork). Also the "foie", the paté and the Iberian ham. And the montadito de lomo al jerez con manzana (toasted sandwich with pork al Jerez with apple).

BODEGUITA ROMERO: It is not very far, on Calle Harinas, 10. Exceptional “pringá”, the best in Seville alongside that of its brother establishments BODEGUITA ANTONIO ROMERO and DOMENECH. Magnificent bacalao en lecho de aceite y tomate (cod on a bed of oil and tomato). Even better Serrano pork.

CASA MORALES: on Calle García de Vinuesa, near the Cathedral. A classic with the usual traditional wines. Some time ago it was typical to stock up with fried fish in the adjacent fish shop and enter with the papelón to devour it at their tables. This has changed and now they offer a more than pleasant assortment of homemade tapas. A traditional bar with traditional taste.

LA CAVA DEL EUROPA: a very good choice in the Puerta de la Carne. A great wine menu which can be ordered by the glass and a chalk board with absolutely unique tapas which change depending on the season. Of special mention: wantun de sanfaina (received an award in the feria de la tapa) and cod in papillote.

DOMENECH: This former Seville footballer runs a miniscule bar on Calle Murillo, next to Magdalena church, in which you can savour, if it is not too crowded, splendid “pringá” (a small warm roll with stew meat and sausage).

CASA ROMÁN: In the middle of the Santa Cruz quarter, in the Plaza de los Venerables, 1, is located this sacrosanct place where they have first class Iberian ham. The place and the atmosphere are worth it.

LAS CALESAS: It is in Los Remedios, outside of the monumental zone, but it is worth visiting. Magnificent empanadilla (tuna pasty) and patatas paja fritas an interesting dish of fried potatoes immediately covered with strips of Iberian ham of the same size.

DULCINEA: In Triana, Calle San Jacinto. Possibly the best ensaladilla (potato salad) in Seville.

LA ALBARIZA: On Calle Betis. Magnificent house. Good Sanlucar Manzanilla (dry, white sherry), best Iberian ham and pleasant food.

BODEGUITA ANTONIO ROMERO: You can also find the BAR. There are two, on Calle Gamazo, near BECERRA a first quality house for food and drink, and on Calle Antonia Díaz, near the Plaza de Toros (Bull Ring). Recommended tapa: “Piripi”, a sandwich made with mayonnaise, tomato, cheese and bacon which is served after being toasted and is delicious. Everything is good here.

BARBIANA: The ‘temple’ of our friend Manolo. We can have tapas at the bar or eat in the interior. It is a safe place, where there are always a few stews and where they also make good fried food (it is not so easy). Try their tortillita de camarones (little baby shrimp omelettes). Order the manzanilla (dry sherry) Barbiana en Rama, one of my favorites.

LAS COLUMNAS- BODEGA DE SANTA CRUZ: this emblematic bodega, located on the corner of Mateos Gago and Rodrigo Caro streets is characterised by its mixed bag of clients and its “electric” waiters. Good homemade tapas and very reasonably priced.

LA ESTRELLA: On Calle Estrella this is a unique bar which serves different food. The paté de cabracho is outstanding.

RÍO GRANDE: It is a magnificent restaurant located in the best spot in Seville, next to the river, with excellent views. Recommended: superb arroz negro (black rice). The wine selection is good, and the menu very complete. Truly worth the effort.

PUERTA GRANDE: It is on the street Antonia Díaz directly across from the Maestranza. Taurine and elegant. Its chickpea stews are memorable and its meat and fish are too. And its Alcalá cakes.

ABACERIA DE SAN LORENZO: It is in the proximity of the Gran Poder church, in the San Lorenzo quarter. Calle Teodosio 53. Andalusian products. Lots of flavor. Marvellous morcilla de hígado (liver blood sausage). The best full-bodied wines.

CASABLANCA: A bar hard to equal. Avenida de la Constitución on the corner of Reales Atarazanas. Great, fresh food. Great Andalusian stews. Lots of style.

CASA RICARDO: Next to Gran Poder, behind La Soledad, Calle Hernán Cortés, 2. It is a little piece of Holy Week with a bar and table. Cofradiero (Semana Santa brotherhood) atmosphere. Splendid croquettes and house bread, bread with tomato and Iberian ham. Scenes of Holy Week shown on the television and the atmospheric music is processional marches. Sublime.

QUITAPESARES: the tireless and irreplaceable Pepe Perejil is the soul of this tavern, situated in the Plaza Padre Jerónimo de Córdoba, 3. He could just as easily sing a saeta, a sevillana or a fandango, while he serves wine as he could tell a story, as he cuts Iberian ham or salchichón (spiced sausage).

ALVARO PEREJIL: Son of the previous, he has a wine shop on Calle Mateos Gago, near the Giralda where he always serves some soup and a singular tapa: “the perejil islet”. He does not sing, but he is funny and is a first-class guy. On the door of the miniscule men’s bathroom in the corner of the bar, which is no bigger than four hands by four hands, he has hung a sign which reads jokingly: “Don’t run through the halls of the WC”.
