Flamenco in Seville
Flamenco in any of its forms (singing,
dancing or guitar playing) is the most representative form
of artistic expression in southern Spain: Andalucía
(Andalusia).
Flamenco is an ancient art form from Spain whose
origins are from the crossing of Islamic, Jewish and Christian popular
music and dance in Spain during the Middle Ages. Given its immense
popularity it has evolved over the centuries. So, unlike other traditional
art forms, it is not static.
Flamenco in the 20th century has had a major influence
on other styles of music, from classical to jazz. In recent years
Flamenco itself has been influenced by other styles of music, such
as blues, jazz and hip-hop.
The result is the fascinating Flamenco fusion of
artists such as: Ketama, Las Niñas, Martires del
Compás. The classics are: Camarón
de la Isla, José Mercé, Paco de Lucía
(guitar), Sara Baras, Rafael Amargo, Antonio Canales
and Joaquín Cortés..
Seville is the cradle of both old and new Flamenco.
Each day it is more popular and alive, adapting to the new genres
of music that emerge from the urban cultures of the younger generations
all over Spain..
So forget the idea that flamenco is just something
for tourists, in Seville you can experience flamenco in the streets,
bars, concert halls and at any popular fiesta.
